Rick Johnston's comedy/thriller, Cahoots, opens Friday, May 14, and runs weekends through May 30th at the Greenhouse Theatre in
Woodcreek. Friday and Saturday performances are at
8:00 pm, and Sunday matinees are at
2:30 pm. This is the Wimberley Players' third production in their 25th anniversary year of providing quality entertainment to the Wimberley Valley and surrounding communities.
Neil Simon's The Odd Couple (Female Version) and Ernest Thompson's On Golden Pond were both blockbusters, playing to sold- out houses and enthusiastic audiences, and the tradition continues with this hilarious farce of murder and its cover up. After its world premiere in England in 1986, Cahoots opened in New York in 1990, and it is now entertaining theater patrons all over the country. (It really is a "hoot"!!)
Director Rob Sandefur finds himself on the other side of the curtain having just completed a role as the prospective bridegroom in "On Golden Pond." He has assembled an outstanding cast of talented and experienced actors to deliver Johnston's witty dialogue and rapid-fire one- liners in a tale that has come to be known as the "peppermill murder." The Millers (Judith Laird and Steve Uzzell of San Marcos) are hosting a dinner party for their friends the Shields (Kim and Dave Calkins) in their well-appointed New York apartment when they find themselves involved in a most bizarre murder, and their efforts to cover it up provide a succession of hysterically funny scenes. Gina McClure makes her debut with the Wimberley Players as Officer Grant who investigates the crime, becomes embroiled in the cover up, and should have stayed home that night! "Cahoots" is produced by Judith Laird, with Molly Mazzarella as Assistant Director.
Dave Calkins appeared most recently as the scheming husband in last year's production of Frederick Knott's intriguing melodrama,
"Dial "M" For
Murder." Dave frequently works on crew, taking publicity photos and videotaping the shows. Dave and wife Kim were a winning team as loving grandparents in the box office hit "Over the River." Judith Laird is still remembered for her role as the precocious dog in "Sylvia", her first appearance on stage with the Wimberley Players. She recently starred as Florence Unger in Neil Simon's hilarious comedy, "The Odd Couple (Female Version)." Steve Uzzell directed and performed in Ernest Thompson's poignantly beautiful comedy, "On Golden Pond", that closed April 11 after a highly successful run. Uzzell has also displayed his acting talent in several recent productions at the Greenhouse Theatre including "The Odd Couple", "The Dining Room" and he portrayed the long-suffering son Ludie Watts in
