The Wimberley Community Chorus is a local volunteer choral group organized almost three decades ago by Mary Guemple. The WCC has been hard at work since January learning some very challenging music.
There have been many guest directors since Mary Guemple retired, including Ellen Digiosia, Jean Wood, Sidney Thompson, Tom and Penny Gabrielsen, Bruce Billingsley, Elizabeth Hodges, V. J. Lawrence, Dan Stephens, Cina Crisara, Thomas Coker, Charles Flores, Scott Johnson, Anne Jones and Cloys Webb.
James Kritikos is returning for his second season directing the chorus. Jones has been the director at Canyon Lake High School in Comal ISD since it opened in 2007. Mr. Kritikos has built the choir program from the ground up, starting with only ten kids in the choir program at the beginning to over 95 choir students and 40 piano students enrolled in his classes today. Mr. Kritikos' choirs have consistently received sweepstakes at UIL Concert and Sightreading Contests, and have placed students into the TMEA All-State Choir. Mr. Kritikos has a Bachelors of Music Education from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where he studied with Dr. Kenneth Fulton.
Brenda Matheny will be this year’s accompanist. Brenda played for the UNCC orchestra as well as serving as an accompanist for various musicians and singers. Brenda then auditioned for and was accepted into the UT-Austin Music School, where she studied with Prof. Nancy Garrett for 3 years. She currently teaches piano lessons at Sound Situation, plays for Sunday services and the choir at Blanco United Methodist Church, and accompanies the Blanco County Community Choir and the Canyon Lake High School choir.
There are more than 80 members in the community chorus with 40 members singing in these concerts.
All concerts are free, although donations are very much appreciated. All concerts are open to the public.
