Free School Supplies, Free Health Screenings and Services Assistance for Wimberley School Children at the Back to School Fiesta

The Barnabas Connection kicks off pre-registration for the Back to School Fiesta on Saturday, August 22nd, 2009.  The Fiesta will be held from 9 AM to 12 PM at the Wimberley United Methodist Church.

The Back to School Fiesta is hosted by the Barnabas Connection, a community outreach program of the Wimberley United Methodist Church. The Back to School Fiesta has become an annual event with many community partners providing Wimberley ISD students with free school supplies, back to school haircuts, immunizations from the Hays County Health Department, dental and vision screenings and more. The Fiesta was hosted for the first time in August of 2006 and provided free school supplies for 100 children. The 2008 Fiesta helped 240 children with free school supplies, and we are anticipating helping 300 children in 2009.
Every school year families are asked to provide for their children’s school supplies at an estimate of $40 per child. This cost estimate does not include costs for school clothes, athletics, or extracurricular activities. With multiple children in one family this amount per child can make it very difficult for families to address this expense in addition to their usual needs. As of December 2008, the number of children on the free and reduced lunch program represented 26% of the enrolled population of Wimberley ISD, which explains the need for this event.
Back to School Fiesta Partners currently include the Wimberley Rotary Club, Wimberley Presbyterian Church, St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Lutheran Church of the Resurrection, Wimberley United Methodist Church, Wimberley Community Civic Club, and the Wimberley Lion’s Club, but the list is still growing!
Become a sponsor of the Back to School Fiesta with a financial donation to purchase school supplies and backpacks. Donations made out to the Barnabas Connection of WUMC and designated for the Back to School Fiesta are tax-deductible and can be mailed to the Barnabas Connection, c/o WUMC, PO Box 737, Wimberley, TX 78676. For more information please contact Vicki McCuistion, program director of the Barnabas Connection at (512) 847-3109, or Anna White 847-8503 (evenings).
The 2009 Back to School Fiesta is scheduled for Saturday, August 22, 9:00 am to 12:00 pm at the Wimberley United Methodist Church. Children who are in need of supplies or just immunizations from the Back to School Fiesta can be pre-registered over the phone with a Barnabas Connection volunteer at 847-1664 through August 17, 2009.
