Hays County Continues Residential Tire Disposal at Driftwood and Wimberley Recycling Centers

January 2010
In the USA, about 300 million tires are scrapped or dumped per year.
Burning tires creating huge amounts of toxic air pollution, oil, and heavy metals; including:
- benzene (carcinogen) - lead - polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - butadiene (central nervous system damage, carcinogen) - styrene (potential carcinogen) - dioxins - furans
Hays County is continuing its efforts to rid roadsides, backyards and fields of unwanted tires, although there is a $2 per tire recycling fee ($6 if tire is still on the rim. Until recently, the county worked in conjunction with the nonprofit Central Texas Resource Conservation and Development Area, Inc., which supplied grant money from the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality for the recycling.
Tires must be 20" or under in rim diameter and there is currently no limit to the number a resident can dispose of at the centers.
The facility does not accept solid- or foam-filled tires. Businesses that deal with tires must continue to dispose of them in accordance with Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) regulations.
Tires may be dropped off at the Hays County Recycling/Solid Waste Centers at 1691 Carney Lane (end of CR 278) in Wimberley, phone 512-847-3504, or at 20290 FM 150 West at CR 162 (Darden Hill Road) in Driftwood (Pct. 4 Yard), phone 512-858-9515.
The Centers are open 8 AM to 4 PM Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday (closed Wednesdays, Sundays and scheduled c ounty holidays).
If you plan to leave your tires with a business, the TCEQ recommends you access its registration database to
ensure that the company is authorized to manage used or scrap tires
in Texas before you do business with it.
Confirm with the recycling center what happens to the tires after they collect them and that they are not burned.
