A decisive moment in American history comes to life on a grand scale as the new Wimberley Players open the doors of their new theatre for the lively musical 1776, written by Sherman Edwards and Peter Stone.
The Wimberley Players' production of 1776 is being directed and choreographed by Lee Coleé-Atnip and produced by Jana White; Donna Williams is Assistant Director. The cast includes many well-known performers, including David Bisett as John Adams, LeRoy Nienow as Edward Rutledge, Cary Michaels as Richard Henry Lee and Carole Hoffstad as Abigail Adams. Patrons will also be delighted to see Dan Williams as Dickinson, John Daws as Hopkins, Calvin White as the Secretary to the Congress, Allan Eastwood as McNair, and Carl Galante as Ben Franklin.
The 27-member cast gustily sings ensemble songs that bring the American founding spirit to life. The players wear specially created period costumes, right down to vintage buckles and walking sticks and powdered wigs. The production is supported by over 20 crew members.
"All these characters are fascinating," said Director Coleé-Atnip. "They were passionate about their country. Yet the founding fathers had traits much like people we all know today. They could be petty, visionary, anti-social, or charming. Even the so-called villains are adorable, wonderful characters."
A large stage and new sound and lighting systems are enabling the crew to stage a first-class production. "Thanks to a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts, we have a lighting consultant on board to design lighting for our inaugural show," said David Bisett, design coordinator.
For the audience, ample parking in a lighted lot and adequate restrooms off the spacious lobby will be major benefits. "Those patrons who have loyally attended our shows in the tiny Greenhouse over the years are in for some wonderful surprises," said Al Sander, Players president. He added that the building is ADA compliant, so access and seating is available for handicapped guests.
The 1776 production will run four weekends, from September 29 to October 22. Grand Opening Weekend (September 29 and 30 and October 1) features special pre-show catered fare beginning at 7 PM for the evening performances and 1:30 PM for the Sunday matinee. The red, white, and blue inaugural theme will be exemplified by a group of local Daughters of the American Revolution, who will assist at the pre-show receptions throughout the opening weekend.
Tickets can be reserved by telephone by calling 847-0575 and will also be available at the box office at the theatre. The new Playhouse is located at 450 Old Kyle Road (between the Square and FM 3237). Box-office hours are 1 to 5, Monday through Friday. All tickets are $15 except those for Grand Opening Weekend, which are $25. Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
