The Wimberley Players will open the 2006 season at the Greenhouse
Theatre in Woodcreek on January 20 with their production of D. L.
Coburn's Pulitzer Prize winning two character play The Gin Game. Weller
Martin and Fonsia Dorsey, elderly residents of a retirement home, form
a friendship at the card tables where Weller teaches Fonsia, a novice,
how to play the game of gin in their friendly and amusing first
encounter. When Fonsia goes on to win that first game, the second and
third, and continues to win game after game, Weller's good
sportsmanship wears thin, and a situation that had seemed made for
romance begins to falter.
The Gin Game opened in New York in 1977 and starred Jessica Tandy and
Hume Cronyn. It was revived 20 years later in 1997 with Julie Harris
and Charles Durning in the roles of Fonsia and Weller and again enjoyed
great success. The Wimberley Players production stars Diane Hruska
Fowler as Fonsia Dorsey and Bill Phillips as Weller Martin. Diane has
credits in theatre, commercials and a co-starring role in the award
winning television soap opera Silvertime. She has appeared in a number
of Wimberley Players productions including The Trip to Bountiful,
Anything Goes and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Bill
Phillips's credits include the role of Cardinal Wolsey in the Austin
Playhouse production of A Man for All Seasons, and roles in two recent
Greenhouse Theatre productions, On Golden Pond and The Sloth.
First produced in a small theatre in Los Angeles in the fall of 1976, a
good review brought The Gin Game to the attention of The Actors Theatre
of Louisville where it was one of the first productions in what has
become that company's festival of new plays. When The Gin Game opened
on Broadway, it was an immediate hit, garnering four Tony nominations
and a best actress award for Jessica Tandy. After 516 performances in
New York, the play went on tour in the United States, Britain and the
Soviet Union.
The Gin Game opens on January 20 with the traditional opening night
complimentary champagne buffet afterward. It runs on weekends through
February 5. Reservations can be made anytime day or night by calling
(512) 847-0575 or in person at the Wimberley Players box office in the
Ozona Motor Bank lobby in Wimberley. The box office is open from 1 to 5
p.m. Monday - Friday beginning January 16. All tickets are $13.00 and
both Visa and Mastercard are accepted.
