Commissioners Court Proclaims June as Juneteenth Month in Hays County

Hays County Courthouse, San Marcos, TX – The Hays County Commissioners Court on Tuesday proclaimed June as Juneteenth Month in Hays County, and encouraged all residents and visitors to join in celebrating the anniversary of June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers landed in Galveston and informed the Texas slaves that they were free – two-and-a-half years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed.
According to the proclamation, Juneteenth is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery in our nation and was made an official Texas holiday in 1979.
Below, Juneteenth Celebration organizers Rose Brooks (holding proclamation) and Ollie Davis (holding events poster) spoke to the Court about the numerous festivities planned for the San Marcos area, from a Thursday evening cake auction to fund scholarships for deserving high school students to a multiple-day BBQ cook-off and music festival at San Marcos City Park & Plaza to Saturday morning’s parade. Many in the Courtroom began the celebration by joining in on the photo at the suggestion of Precinct 1 Constable David Peterson, who directs the BBQ cook-off.

Wimberley's river and creeks are a popular attraction.
