LIONS CLUB Meeting - April 15, 2008
Lion Seba Parish provided another thought provoking invocation. Lion Billy Broyles gave us some of the historical background about our pledge to the flag before leading us in the pledge. Song leader Lion Jim McMeans led us in a rendition of Home on the Range.
Substitute Tail Twister Lion Jack Bourke promptly fined all who failed to show for the “Call to Trash bags” for staffing the Road Warriors and then turned the twisting of tails over to veteran retired tail twister Jay Chism. Lion Jay auctioned an invaluable putter used by Jack Nicholas in winning the Masters. Lion John Lyon is now the proud owner of this valuable property. Lion Mayor Tom Haley walked off with a box of new balls… Lion Annette Harrington announced that Lion Nathan Dean had mis-calculated his departure to Las Vegas and was at the time of the meeting hunkered down someplace protected from sniper fire and the ridicule of his fellow Lions for obtaining a substitute twister when it was needed for next week. After the club was informed of the indiscretion that could have been caused by the lateness of night and age, Lion Nathan was fined by unanimity.
Lion Joe Harrison reported the membership contest was continuing with applications going out and completed ones coming in completed.
WHS Principal Greg Bonewald introduced Bing Bingham as Teacher of the Month. Bing is no stranger to the Lions as he brings many venues of music to the Lions and the community with his award winning music students.
Principal Greg also introduced Kate Fulkerson as the Student of the Month. She sounds like one of the very outstanding students with her advance courses, high class standing, student organization activity, and working. What a student!
Lion Lane Hartsock and Dan Williams presented the donations to the community. Lion Annette Harrington accepted $200 for Wimberley Literacy Volunteers so one of the tutors could attend advanced training at the state level. Amy Phelps and Zack Burke accepted $350 for the 4H club for Animal grooming equipment. Amy, her husband, and son all work in Concession #3 on Market Days. Kelley Shand accepted $500 for Danforth JHS “Aiming for Science” program that needs replacement arrows. This program is a fun way to teach math and science using bows and arrows experiments. David Erck accepted $2,500 for the Wimberley Ray of Hope Foundation building a meeting facility for the various AA programs. Jimmy Robertson accepted $3,230 for acoustics resolution and an A/V Cart. Tonight the Lions gave out $6,780 to the community bringing the total so far this year to $58,415. This total does not include money expended for the 32 students on four-year scholarships, 4 students on two-year vocational scholarships, and students in the exchange program.
Sparks flew with tonight’s program. Mr. Fire himself was the program. Mr. Fire is a nickname for Joe Vitale, author of over 30 best sellers of the self help/motivational genre. This program would have been interesting for any audience with his relaxed, humorous style. Living in Wimberley for the last eight years and the incentives of book gifts for questions made for a lively and entertaining evening.
Lion Boss made an Outstanding Lion Award to DuAnn Redus, who had left the meeting early last time. DuAnn was recognized for her outstanding work as Program Chair. She recognized her committee for their help: Frank Curtis, Frances Jones, Jo Nell Erck, Gary Harlow, David Slider, and Pete Masterson.
Lion Morris Haggerton recognized John Estepp as an Outstanding Lion. He was cited for his work at Market Days, Texas Lions Camp, and hosting exchange students. Lion John Lyon was awarded the Texas Lions Camp Life Membership for his work at the camp.
Lion Lee Gibson announced the nominations for Lion of the Year. They were Lions Freddie Jordan, John Stark, and Frank Williams. The write up on each is below.

Lion of the Year Nominations
Lion Freddie Jordon: As Lion Tamer, Lion Freddie prepares the Community Center for each Lions Club Meeting. This includes assuring the tables and chairs are set properly, preparing the microphones, amplifier, speakers, projector, flags, banners, lecterns, badges, and sign in sheets are where and when needed. These out of the spotlight tasks would ruin meetings if not done perfectly and reliably. He performed these same feats for last springs two day 2-S3 District Convention where representatives from 66 Lions Clubs came to Wimberley. His efforts contributed directly to the resounding success of the Convention. This elected position places him on the Club’s Board of Directors dedicating leadership to the club. Lion Freddie Jordon comes to Market Day early and stays late. He has responsibility for the parking lots with managing, staffing, volunteer coordination, and collecting money from each parking lot.
Lion John Stark: John has been a Lion since the year 2003. In that time, he has exhibited an outstanding willingness to serve the Club, the community and his church in any capacity he is called upon to do. In the year 2007/2008 as Chairman of the Facilities and Buildings Committee he has excelled in Project management of several key important projects including the major Drainage project, the remodeling of Concession 2, repair and painting of Concession 2 restrooms as well as many others. He has been Concession 2 Manager for several years. On all of these jobs John has been responsible for cost and time estimates, bidding, and supervision of the work. John has worked well with Lions Field management and the Board of Directors on all aspects of his projects. John exemplifies the lion’s motto “We Serve” by his devotion and service to the Wimberley Lions Club.
Lion Frank Williams: Frank has been a Lion slightly less than three years, but in that short time has been a dynamo for the Club. Under his direction, new life has been breathed into the on-going “Road Warrior” effort, and last year, in concert with Keep Wimberley Beautiful, Frank organized the first city-wide roadside clean up. At Market Day, Frank moved from Personnel Manager to Manager of Concession #6, and was recently promoted to Concession Manager for the whole field. As First Vice President, Frank has been very involved in the committees for which he has oversight. He has participated with the Buildings and Facilities Committee in a wide variety of projects at Lions Field, and also with renovations at Lions Park at Ozona Bank. Frank was deeply involved with moving a literal mountain of trash during the Lions Field clean up in the off season. He effectively chaired the Donations Committee, also chaired this year’s Nominating Committee, and will become Club President in July.
