We moved here recently and are becoming more and more conscious of environmental issues. Getting closer to nature brings it home. My question may sound silly but we really do want to know. Does planting rye grass every year help or hurt? Are there natural advantages to leaving a yard be?We already know St. Augustine is a no-no here because of its thirsty ways. If we invest in a buffalo grass yard will the rye interfere? Thanks from a gardening latecomer. Sam

Dear Sam,I don't have any answers for you about the grass planting. But the Lady Bird Johnson Wildlife Center, on the far Southside of Austin, they will have the answers for you. San Marcos also has a city greenhouse and an extensive horticulture program. They would know. original cyn

I could never get buffalo grass going and have always wondered if it's really the wonder plant it's been purported to be. Rye grass does make for a green winter and that's sort of nice. I don't know if it impacts other grasses but I sort of doubt it since it dies off every spring. I can say that since I quit mowing in 1992 the grass burrs had all but gone until this year with all the summer rain and even now they aren't that bad around mi casa compared to everywhere else. Natural seems to be the better way. My advice is to take the advice of Original Cyn and use her contacts......whoever she is, she's a pretty bright bulb..

Mucho gracias to both of you. I'll follow up on those two places. My experience is similar to starstrucks- the more area on our acres we can leave alone the more interesting it becomes. Did you plant seed or plugs with your buffalo grass? I heard that makes a difference.
