This morning at about 7am river road was shut down near 1492. I couldn't get up there to see why because going around to Wayside and Green Acres was already going to make me late for work. Any idea what was going on? All I could see was some pickups blocking the road.

There was probably flooding there. We have a wet weather creek nearby we keep an eye on. Usually when it's running as high as it was this morning, there's flooding at the low water crossings on the Blanco.People have drowned in those low spots driving in the dark and I once talked to a man who was standing by his truck on that road after a rain like this. He told me he and some other people sometimes block the road before someone else can go plunging into those deadly waters. It takes time for the county or the village or whoever is responsible to get out there and put up the official road closed roadblocks. That man has probably saved another life or two. It's inconvenient for driving but we surely did need the rain.

Thanks to all for this information. We now have a video clip linked from the home page of VisitWimberley.com (under the Featured Pic) showing the river level at River Road and 1492 around midmorning.Still quite impressive! Marilyn

Yeah I figured it out later that day when I went home. Took pictures of the outcome, too. http://www.grandprizm.com/blanco3-12-07.html

Nice pictures. I took some also - from similiar viewpoints - I think yours may have turned out better. Seeing in person, it definitely looks like some serious water went through.

Drove all of River Road around 4:30 this afternoon and could get all the way through, but takes more caution than usual what with mud and remaining minor debris. The low water crossing at 7A is still majorly closed of course. Trash in the trees showed there was some real flooding, several feet up into the trees on the other side of the road from the river. Just another day in the Hill Country I guess.

Yep, like the old saying goes, "we get 30 inches of rain a year and you ought to be here the day we get it".
