It was owned by the Wimberley Valley Watershed Association. Deal is awaiting completion. It will be owned by Hays County. That should be reassuring.

Not sure all of the information is being presented; so, I did a bit more research. I hope you find this useful:The county has already invested about $3 million into land and acquisitions at Jacobs Well (2007 Park Bond Fund). Since then, they have had a management agreement with Wimberley Valley Watershed Association. During this time: WVWA has expanded science and research at the well (divers have explored over a mile into the well documenting species and studying the aquifer); recently completed a comprehensive geological survey of our local aquifer and watersheds; developed a master plan with LBJ wildflower center for conservation education; started habit restoration and management of invasive species with the help of a few local Master Naturalists and other volunteers; hosted education events for local students; and this year started public outreach. The new acquisition was the result of the threat of a high density development and disagreements about easements from that project to the well. Lawsuits and countersuits followed involving the developers, WVWA, and the City of Woodcreek. WVWA prevailed, although two years of protracted legal battles was an enormous financial strain on the organization. The developers agreed to settle, but WVWA had to raise $1.7 million to complete the deal. No source for private financing could be found. This summer, the opportunity for additional county funding came together. The Nature Conservancy is a partner in the deal. They have the legal horsepower to develop and to enforce the conservation easements. This will double the protected area around the well to about 100 acres. I really can’t see how the County can screw this up; as long as the WVWA continues to manage the area. But, don’t just take my word for it - Attend one of the Saturday morning tours of Jacobs Well Natural Area. The tour starts at 10 am and is lead by a trained volunteer, who will also lead a discussion on the history of the well, the local geology, the watershed and aquifer that supports the well, and native species. You can bring your swimsuit and take a dip in the well afterwards.

Does Five Mile Dam park ring a bell with anyone? The notion that it would be difficult for the county to screw up this deal is little more than wishing and hoping. I'm willing to bet that this deal turns into a regional park and it will have everything that goes with that ---- the good and the bad. Of course there are those who say that the well is destined to dry up anyway. So maybe the wathershed association just unloaded it at the right time. Who knows. All I know is that the deal has a real stinch to it. 50 acres for $1.7 million? Please. Blue Hole was $2 million for more than 4 times that amount of land. The 50 acres doesn't have a drop of water on it. Blue Hole ... well ... you get my point. Stinch. Conley. Stinch.

Don't expect anything out of the watershed association or their strong supporters, other than praise for the deal and Conley. After all, the deal includes $250,000 a year for five years to the watershed association for management. That's $250K of your money and mine.
