Hi. Does any one know anything about Wilson Creek? For example, is it a year-round creek? How many months does it flow? Any input would be appreciated. Thanks.

My folks home overlooked Wilson Creek, most times it was dry, but when it rained it was lovely, small waterfall right behind their house.
I have no access to it now, so I cannot tell you if it is dry or wet.

Creek levels in this area are determined by water table levels and/or rainfall amounts. (Of course, you knew that.) Nearly all can be depleted...some to dusty dry beds...during droughts, then morph into raging rivers during flood or high rainfall conditions. The Blanco River itself has been observed to dwindle to a trickling stream at some points during extended droughts, and was dry at one point years ago.

The most realistic policy is to assume large variations in water levels, especially as global warming conditions continue to increasingly affect natural resources.

The wet weather creek near me flows between 6 and 9 months of the year, usually, but has had some water all but a few days this year due to the weird weather conditions we've been experiencing. Maybe that can give you an idea?

May I ask why you'd like to know? Are you planning to buy property there?

Please keep us posted about what you learn. It's an interesting question.

Thanks.

Thanks for your responses. I am considering buying some property on Wilson Creek to build a small house. I just wondered how many months of the year I would get to enjoy the creek. In looking for property, I've seen creeks advertised as "spring-fed", "year-round", "wet weather", and "intermittent." I just wondered what category Wilson Creek falls into.

Thanks

Here is a link to information on the local watershed - the San Marcos watershed, which includes Wimberley. It contains water data going back 77 years:

http://cfpub.epa.gov/surf/huc.cfm?huc_code=12100203

And mapping system information from the USGS:

http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.GetDetail?tab=Y&id=1376833

There is no specific data on Wilson Creek, but I live 100 feet from the creek, and I have observed that it maintains a very minor flow most of the year, with infrequent flooding of 2-3 feet for a few hours at a time during the wettest parts of the year. When flooding, I have seen it rise 2 feet in less than 2 minutes at Leveritts Loop and Rhodes Lane, then recede less than an hour after the rain stops. It maintains enough water flow to support wild turkeys that roost down by the creek and run around the neighborhood.

I am sorry Contributor, but the creek at Leveritts Loop and Rhodes is not Wilson Creek. Wilson creek comes across Green Acres road, then curves over behind the homes on Leveritts Loop about halfway down the road, towards the river. It then curves back over into a housing area off River Road and drains into the Blanco where the One Car narrow bridge is.
I said my folks had a home on Wilson, on Leveritts Loop. Their home on this side of the creek was way up high, the other side was low, and whenever Wilson backed up, it flooded the other side bad.
Just wanted to clear up this error. I have no idea what they call that creek at the corner of LL and Rhodes. A main in the neck when it floods over the road, is my name for it.
Here is a detail map showing Wilson Creek in relation to the roads I mentioned.---- http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?searchtype=address&country=US&addtohistory=&searchtab=home&address=&city=wimberley&state=tx&zipcode=78676

Thanks for the correction. I found an un-official flood plain map based on FEMA data that shows Wilson Creek, but the flood plain indicated on the map doesn't look correct:

Thanks to contributor and j2422 for the research and info you provided. I'm getting a flood plain survey on it, and should get the results soon. I have another question. We are going to be building a small house on the property and were wondering whether it is wise to put a septic so close to a creek. I want to protect the creek as much as possible, but still have indoor plumbing. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

Re, septic system: Look into an aerobic system; supposedly the liquid (water) sprayed out by these systems is as pure as many municipal water supplies! This kind of system will cost more than the old-fashion kind, but it's worth it if you care about the environment. Also, depending on other factors, building codes sometimes require this type system.
Thank you for being concerned about the creek. (Unfortunately, some folks who live in the area use our water ways as trash cans.)

As to the septic system. First thing I would suggest is to have a septic person tell you what you can or cannot do on your property, in regards to Wilson Creek.
As to the Aerobic system, I had to have one installed, due to the break down of my drain field. My biggest problem, is I also have a well, and you cannot have a sprinkler spraying the septic near a well.
Luckily I have enough land they could put it in another place, but I had not known about this fact.
Also you must have a contract for inspections from a licensed company, I believe it is 3-4 times a year. All they do is look in the tanks, and take a water sample, not much but you do have to do this.
The upkeep on our system, is mainly keeping a tube in one tank filled with Chlorine Tablets, the same used for swimming pools.
One good thing, they disperse the water by putting in sprinklers, they have a certain amount they have to install, and where they can be located, and they do. So your yard will get watered whenever the one tank reaches a certain level.
Plan on mowing year round
