I have lived in Wimberley for three years. We have a family of Woodpeckers living in one of our large red oaks. We have lived in peace with these critters for years, but lately Woody has taken a fancy to the trim on my house. Any suggestions? Woody's days are numbered unless I can figure out a peaceful solution. Thanks!

Here's a pretty good link. I had one in a certain area of my house and it seemd to be deterred after I tacked a piece of wrinkled aluminum foil loosely near the area it was working.

You might want to thank Woodie. They usually don't bother pecking in places that don't have insects and he may be giving you a heads up.

On the other hand, once in a rare while, I would swear I've seen woodpeckers pecking for the heck of it, almost always in late spring early summer. I wondered if it had anything to do with territory.

Aha! Just as I suspected. I found this:

"But food and shelter are not the only reasons woodpeckers hammer on the roof. Your roof or siding may be bug-free, but a woodpecker will still tap to establish its territory or to attract a mate. Buildings, utility poles and fence posts are favorite spots for woodpeckers to practice their 'drumming.'"

I have found this to be only a seasonal occurrence and thought it was funny instead of annoying. But one did find the metal roof vent just outside the room where I was sitting one day and the unexpected sound made me rise like a rocket. Wowsie! What an effective racket that was!

Still thought it was funny when I figured it out.

I feel your frustration. We have a very angry pecker at our house as well. He likes our front window! Nothing like sleeping soundly at 7 a.m and waking up to what sounds like a machine gun going off. We have tried everything. I've consulted with the game warden as well. I've been told that they often times do this to attract a mate. Showing off a bit. This one KNOWS he's making me mad. I've gone out and shooooed him off by waving my dish towel. He will literally, casually HOP over onto the tree, climb up it and then laugh at me!
We have dealt with Mr. Pecker for over a year. I did finally find that he LOVES the sugar water I put out for the hummingbirds. So I placed a feeder as far away from the house as I could, in a tree. That has helped. He seems very interested in the feeder. Doesn't peck it but examines it and then drinks from it. He's a funny little guy but not at 7 a.m.
He hasn't done any damage to the window or the house......someone said he may be mad about the house being built. No, I didn't build it, I just bought it. It's possible they cut his tree down to make room for it and he's angry.
FYI.......it's illegal to kill a woodpecker. Heavy fine if caught and I'm sure that if your neighborhood is like mine, someone is ALWAYS watching. One web site said place suet in tree's away from the house. Apparently they are very curious little peckers. LOL Good luck.

I have two pesty woodpeckers who decided to cut territory on my living room window. The foe they are attacking is their own reflection in the glass, cardinals will do this too especially in spring.
One sounds off in the neighborhood and instantly the other macho does combat with the glass. These guys might even be brothers, quien sabe?
