We had an unexpected visitor over the weekend. As far as we can tell, it was a ringtail cat.http://peabody304.com/ringtail_cat1_sm.jpg http://peabody304.com/ringtail_cat2_sm.jpg When I first saw the photos, I thought it was a raccoon, but with a funny head. After a closer look, and a little research (with my daughter's help) we've decided that it's a ringtail cat. We think it's pretty cool.

I sure enjoy your wildlife shots and the video was great. Ringtail cats are interesting and I have seen them more out in Big Bend area with a few sitings around here. Please keep sharing!

Miss Chris - Thanks for the kind words. I wasn't sure if people were getting tired of me and the wildlife camera pictures. Here's a short video (about 23 seconds) of a family of raccoons around the water trough. At the very beginning you can see a larger raccoon go out of the frame on the right. At the end, the larger one comes back and walks off with the three little ones following. http://peabody304.com/Raccoon_family.wmv

Tired? Not in the least. Keep it up, I'm hoping for mountain lion footage.

peabody304 – Would you care to tell us what camera you use and supply any tips for its use? I’ve been considering setting up such a “trap” for my visitors

Your video and camera shots are almost as good as the Animal Planet channel. Who knows what you may photograph next.

I'm glad everyone is enjoying the photos; I know we are.My wife got me the camera for my birthday. While I did have several features I was interested in (at least 4 megapixel camera and the ability to add memory storage) I'm not sure how she picked it out. The model she got me is now marketed as the Stealth Cam Rouge IR (I think it was just called STC-I540IR when I got it). http://www.stealthcam.net/HTML/sc_rogue_ir.html As you have seen, it gets pretty good results both in daylight and at night (the infrared LED lights really help) shooting either still photos or video. I did buy a sealed lead acid battery for it. This provides plenty of power for the 7 or 8 days we leave it out there. Of course, it's not always stunning shot after shot. Last week it must have been a little windy, so the camera had lots of "false alarm" triggers. My 1GB card was filled up in three days. But, out of 700+ pictures, we did see the owls. I have noticed some regular visitors. The does with two fawns stop by for a drink pretty often. -peabody

Reddog,Getting a photo of a mountain lion would fall into the "be careful what you wish for" category. It would be very cool, but our dogs are out there with us a lot of the time. I wouldn't be surprised to see coyote at the trough. I know they are out there. I recently found some coyote scat not far from the trough.

Here's one more.http://peabody304.com/buck_8-2-2009_sm.jpg This guy showed up for the first time while I was out there. This picture was taken was the second night that he visited the trough. He was very skittish and was moving all around the trough over a five or 6 minute period.

A coati would be nice also.I've found mountain lion track, scat and evidence of kills on my place west of Wimberley, but it's been a while; they are out there.

peabody, I just wanted to tell you that I love your photos too. I think I'll get one of those cameras for my hubby as an anniversary gift! He'll love to see what comes out at night at our deer feeders.

bren - I'm looking forward to seeing what camera captures, too.My wife and I were talking the other day about the camera. She says it's a little like waiting for Christmas when we leave the camera out there for a week.

Not only do I monitor the website faithfully for the next video, I forward some to my poor friends still struggling to survive in Houston. They are an absolute delight & you're very generous to share them.
