We have a very friendly, very tame parakeet on our deck. My two cats are VERY interested, so I can't keep him. If you are missing a pet or know someone who would like to adopt this little guy, let me know. I can send pics.

I had one coming to my feeder for almost a year. He (it) has not been around for about a month. Is it blue and gray with a yellow spot on its head?

If it is the same one it is used to cats being around. It is one tough little bird. Lived through the freezes and cold. It seems to have taken up the habits of House Sparrows including ground feeding. I thought it might have flown off to find a mate. It would never let me touch it.

I hadn't thought of this for years, but back in the olden days when we lived in Houston, the area inside the loop where we lived was just coming down with "developmentisis." That's my word for developers getting a loan on a lot, razing it, and throwing up a mini-mansion lookalike, really killing the interesting character of the neighborhood. When I moved there into a pre-existing home with great history, next door was an empty corner lot, if you can believe it. It had grand old trees and a colony of little parrots. I couldn't believe my eyes when I first saw them, but watched them survive just fine through a couple of winters. They were a wonderful sight. City Hall had an old tower they left up just because the birds loved to roost there sometimes, too. They were treasured by all of us. Of course, a developer came in, razed the lot, etc. etc. Bye bye parrots. I mourned their loss for quite awhile. When I saw this article, it brought a big smile to my face. What great birds!! Turns out my little parrots (and that's just what they looked like) were monk parakeets. Way to go, Nature!!!! There's a large group in Austin in the Barton Springs Rd. South Lamar area.
