Jack Lauber, Wimberley Lions Club Lion of the Year, 2000

Jack Lauber, Wimberley Lion of the Year, 2000

In which projects and activities have you participated as a Lion?
I have served on the Donations Committee, Market Financial Committee, and the Long Range Planning Committee and have held the following positions:
  • Afternoon Shift Manager of Concession II
  • Editor of the Newsletter
  • Inventory Control Manager for Market Concessions
  • Booth Leasing Manager
This year I will co-chair the Public Relations Committee.

What are the strangest or most interesting questions you were ever asked at Market Day?
The question most asked is "How do I get a booth at Market?" and the strangest is "Would you please reserve a booth for me in October?" They are shocked when I tell them that we now have a wait list of 87 for year 2001. The strangest question timing was the one that came in a 5:30 in the morning when a vendor called to tell me they were going to be late renewing their contract. Needless to say, neither my wife nor I were happy to be awakened at that hour.

What've you seen at Market Day that would fit in that category?
Nothing surprises me at Market, but how's this one: "Geese and Geese clothing!"

How did you manage to land in Wimberley?
My wife, Helen, and I retired to Wimberley in December of 1989. I retired as Executive Vice President of Sears Logistics Services - Sears, Roebuck & Co.s transportation company, after spending 35 years in the Sears family. We moved from Wheaton, IL to be near our daughters and their families, one in Bryan and one in Houston, and, of course, our 4 grandchildren.

What Wimberley activities have you enjoyed?
I've been through the gamut with Wimberley organizations and find the Lions and my church activities (Lutheran Church) most rewarding.

The second year we were in Wimberley, I was Congregational President of the church and President of the Chamber of Commerce. That was the year that we planned and built the Visitor's Center and at the same time our church moved into its present location south of the square on RR12. I received the 1993 Volunteer of the Year award from the Chamber of Commerce. Since I am a firm believer that the Chamber should be managed by the business community, I have backed off of Chamber activities, but am still very involved with my church activities.

Why did you join the Lions Club?
I joined the Lions to get involved in community activities. I had heard about the Lions Market, and since my wife and I are both flea market junkies thought that would be great. I was especially impressed, and still am, with the fact that the Wimberley Lions Club is so beneficial to the community.

What has being a Lion meant to you?
Being a Lion not only gives you the fellowship of a great bunch of guys and now gals, but give you the opportunity to serve your community. That's what the Lions are all about and as our motto says, "We Serve."

What is your favorite Lions Club project?
I believe my favorite project is our clubs involvement in Foreign Exchange students and our scholarship program. This year I will have the pleasure of serving on the Scholarship Committee.

Would you do it all again?
You bet I would!
