In which projects and activities have you participated as a Lion? When I joined the Wimberley Lions Club in 1997, I started working in the BBQ preparation area where the shifts start at 4 AM. I continued to work there through last year and now help our field manager in the various tasks required to maintain the field and support the Market Day activities.
I have been a member of various committees:
- Membership
- Facilities and Building
- Texas Lions Camp
- Youth Exchange
- Administrative Budget
- Long Range Planning
And served on the Board as Membership Committee Chairman for two years.
What are the strangest or most interesting questions you were ever asked at Market Day? I don't get asked that many questions. Mostly I am told of problems that the vendors have, like no electricity at the booth or ants in their booth space. For electrical problems, it's usually the fault circuit breaker tripped - but on at least one occasion I had to point out that their extension cord was not plugged in.
How did you manage to land in Wimberley? After retiring from NASA in Houston and working for the European Space Agency in Holland for 5 years, my wife Gay and I decided the Hill Country would be where we settled. We looked at various locations and I liked Marble Falls because of the lake, but Gay's two sisters lived in Wimberley, so that helped us decide this was the place. And we have been very happy with that decision.
What Wimberley activities have you enjoyed? Although I was supposedly retired, when we settled here I got a real estate license and worked as a real estate agent full time. I have since slowed down and done more volunteer work. We were in New Neighbors and enjoyed taking various trips with the group and getting to know the other new folks in town. This also got us into a dinner group (although we meet for lunch once a month). We've also enjoyed EmilyAnn productions, and the many other planned or spontaneous musical activities that seem to always be happening here.
Why did you join the Lions Club? When we moved here, my neighbor who was a Lion, talked to me about the club, Market Days, and the great number of Wimberleyites that were in the club. He invited me to a couple of meetings and I decided that it was the perfect place to meet others in the community and to help serve the community.
What has being a Lion meant to you? I think being a Lion gives a sense of pride. Our club supports all the local groups like charities, schools, and also the national Eyesight programs and the Texas Lions Camp for disabled kids.
What is your favorite Lions Club project? The Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville. I go there every spring to help in the work days which get the facilities ready for the summer sessions. And I have been there with our Club to serve a BBQ dinner and a watermelon afternoon treat. Seeing the kids that attend the camp and doing all the things the camp makes possible is very emotional, and the awards session every Friday evening makes you realize how very special this place is.
Would you do it all again? Yes, I would do it all over again - and enjoy it again.
