Drought
conditions are a part of life in the Texas Hill Country, especially in
summer when resources are often overtaxed and undersupplied by rain.
Below are photographs of the 1492 river crossing at River Road
during a summer drought.
Sculpted by the river, the white limestone bed looks almost like water,
but this drought was tough on the Blanco flow...only a small
stream remained. This condition is not uncommon during long periods of
dry weather in the summer.
Yet, thanks to some hardy natural plants, xeriscape candidates, there
are still some beautiful views. These seem to grow right out of the
rock.
It's best to avoid the water in drought conditions,
which will produce higher than usual bacterial counts
in our normally clean rivers and streams. Please use
common sense in determining when to swim.
