Road Construction to Begin on RR 12 from San Marcos to Wimberley
Road construction at the River Road red light in Wimberley, April, 2005
Most people who settle in Wimberley are above-average in resilience, as a rule. But even the most hardy are facing transportation challenges that will accompany road construction plans for routes into and out of the little Village of Wimberley. Issues ranging from environmental impact to economic hardship for the small businesses in the area are expected to arise from proposed and scheduled road construction.
On August 22, 2006, Hays County Commissioners Court approved a measure that includes widening Ranch Road 12 from the San Marcos city limits to the Junction.

The measure, introduced by Precinct 3 Commissioner Will Conley, authorizes allocation of $17 million from Hays County towards the project.

Construction on the RR 12 project is expected to begin in one and a half to two years with completion by 2010.

Besides widening RR 12, the project includes improvements to RR 967 and 1626 from Buda to the Travis County Line and completion of the first phase of the San Marcos Loop on McCarty Ln. from I-35 to State Highway 123.

Construction on the RR 12 project is expected to begin in one and a half to two years with completion by 2010.

Wimberley residents and businesses have already seen years of construction on RR 12 through the center of town. Commuters to Austin also have experienced long waits and significant obstruction from a construction project widening shoulders on the 14 miles that make up the major artery between Wimberley and Dripping Springs.

Although the previous RR 12 North project is still under completion, a new proposal would begin another expansion project for the same strip of road, with plans for more widening. Comments are invited in an Open House held by TxDOT concerning this proposal. (Click here for more details.)
