The 26th Annual Wimberley Community Civic Club Home Tour: The Josh and Sunshine Farris Home

You have passed the entrance hundreds of times, perhaps wondering, but never knowing what might lie beyond the stone posts off of Ranch Road 12 with the flying "N" on each side. Venturing past the gate, following the narrow road as it dips and curls its way through Hill Country cedars and oaks, you arrive at an idyllic pale yellow farmhouse built by Texas Casual Cottages, the home of Josh and Sunshine Farris, their three young boys, two extremely friendly Akita dogs, and one sleepy five-year-old bearded dragon.

A little over twelve months ago Josh and Sunshine decided to take the plunge, leave city life and head for the country. Wimberley called to them loud and clear. Family lived here, their kids loved it - never wanting to leave when they visited - and it had long been Josh's dream to open an outdoor-type retail store; his dream now come to fruition at Peak Outdoors, just above the bridge and below the Wimberley Square at 14015 RR 12.

In the evening he comes home to the peace of the country while the boys sit on the forty-foot porch doing their homework and Sunshine cooks dinner in her open concept kitchen, filled with gleaming stainless steel appliances, granite counter tops and a gas drop in range that every cook covets.

Sunshine loves her new family home with its Heritage design interior showcasing deep-ochre bead board wainscoting, one by six tongue and groove pale gold pine walls, and dark stained pine floors. Her decorating touches are in keeping with the rustic feel, and she has found treasures both at The Tree House in Wimberley and The Arrangement in Houston.

The ten foot long distressed dining table came from Pottery Barn, while the intentionally mismatched chairs and large bench that surround it each have their own story. The over-large muted celadon green flower that serves as a centerpiece in the antiqued turquoise ceramic vase adds a touch of whimsy and welcome color.

Another touch of whimsy and color comes in the form of a painted leaf-green ladder which serves as an unusual hall tree. Sunshine says, "I didn't want an ordinary coat rack. I wanted something different."

Her different look is both charming and unique, with the green ladder juxtaposed next to an antiqued console table, three small ceramic aqua monkeys-in the familiar pose of see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil -and a lively distressed-stripe pink and blue throw rug; all part of an appealing vignette that says welcome to my home.

Upstairs you will find the sleeping dragon in one of the five bathrooms of this 3,300 square foot home, as well as a comfortable game room where the family relaxes, watching movies together while munching on popcorn made in the conveniently located built-in microwave oven adjacent to the seating area.

A family home that a family loves, with porches spanning a combined eighty feet, an outdoor shower, and forty acres for three boys and two dogs to play in and explore is a perfect recipe for happiness and a more than perfect reason for Josh and Sunshine leaving the city and heading to Wimberley.

Come explore their world. See the bearded dragon and more November 8-9, 2013, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, along with five other homes, when the Wimberley Civic Club will host the 26th Annual Hill Country Home Tour.
