The Roberta Holland Home
Tucked away at the top of a tree shaded hill overlooking the Blanco River is the home of Roberta Holland. A well traveled, elegant and versatile woman of many tastes and talents, her home reflects her spirit, her love of light and her passion for art. It is the epitome of eclectic and as interesting as Roberta herself.
Roberta will tell you that she didn’t purchase the house, nor did she purchase the land for purposes of building a house. She purchased a cement slab, another person’s unfinished dream, and then went about making it her own.
Upon entering this home, one hardly knows where to look. You are greeted with a kaleidoscope of color and light. Things old and new, soft and weathered, bright and shiny, square and round. But you are drawn to the light. Walking through antique sliding doors hung on old iron railings, you head through the living room to a wall lined with windows where you spy the magic of a Hansel and Gretel type tree house standing guardian over a sparkling deep blue pool.
Turning around you begin to notice the lifetime of acquired treasures that fill the space. Each piece a work of art in its own right, from the paintings on the walls to the tiny family heirloom courting couch tucked in a corner, to Roberta’s most recent acquisition of Moroccan necklaces displayed in shadow boxes and hung in the entrance hall. In the guest room, suspended from a ceiling fan, is a delicate mobile that is the epitome of joy, paper mache ladies dancing, leaping…cavorting in the wind.
And then you begin to notice other things. Roberta has turned the ordinary into the extraordinary. Doors, closet doors, pantry doors, are glass panels framed in wood. She is a woman with nothing to hide, even to the point of showcasing piles of sweaters in an antique French armoire where the front wooden panels have too been replaced with glass.
Orange walls in the master bedroom look perfect with an apricot rug. The adjoining shower is a verdant sanctuary. Light fixtures throughout the house are perfection, many of them antiques. And everywhere, still, art adorns the walls.
A treasure trove of a life well lived, deserving of a deep long look, Roberta’s home is a house to savor. And still, you will miss things.
