Busy Austin trauma surgeon Oscar Rios was looking for a place to get away and decompress when he bought his Mustang Valley property Wimberley in 2010.
"I wanted a place to relax, cook for my friends and family and enjoy nature," he said. And he initially spent his time doing just that on the seven-acre property: Camping out and enjoying fishing, kayaking and paddleboarding.
Eventually, Rios set to work designing his home. Rather than design a "main" home, he decided to build his smaller guest house first. Constructed by Builder John Wolf, the 1,850-square foot home was completed in the summer of 2013.
The result is a sleek contemporary home with two bedrooms, two full baths and an open, airy living space that takes full advantage of the view of the spring-fed lake.
An avid cook, the owner designed the kitchen around a massive live-edge granite island, which is used as a substantial prep and gathering space where guests can watch him do his handiwork. Open to the living and dining areas, the floor plan has maximum flow for entertaining.
The home's dramatic furnishings were carefully selected by the owner in Houston and Austin. Unique artwork, including carved doors from Indonesia and detailed drawings from Mexico from the couple's travels adorn the walls throughout the home.
Floor-to-ceiling doors open directly onto a covered patio that serves as an additional living space.
Stone steps lead down to the water, which has plenty of fish and is deep enough for recreational activities. Large trees provide leafy shade and a nice canopy while guests sit around the firepit. The setting is so idyllic, the owner selected it as the location for his wedding just last summer.
His smaller home fits him and his new wife, Anita, so well that it's hard for him to imagine building something larger. Named "La Paz," or "Peace" this home is a truly a peaceful respite from the owners' hectic life in Austin.
