THE JOE AND KAREN CARR HOME
Tucked away on peaceful, secluded acreage, Hacienda Granada is the natural conclusion of Joe and Karen Carr's 25 years of research and travel to Mexico's colonial cities and haciendas for their antiques gallery and Mexican book series.
Dramatic nine-foot-tall, nail-studded hacienda doors lead to a sunny, golden-yellow courtyard visible from all rooms and surrounded by an arcaded portal. The living room features Mexican colonial antiques, an 18th-century Ecuadorian trunk and old Mexican dance masks. The dining room's large iron chandelier illuminates rich, burnt-orange walls, Yucatan floor tiles, and an alacena (built-in wall cabinet) fronted with antique doors. A massive, beautifully tiled island is the dramatic focal point for the cocina, inspired by 17th-century Mexican convent kitchens.
The Carrs worked with Gina Andre and Ellen Anspon of A2 Architecture to fine-tune their home design into working drawings. Wimberley builder Micky Maness (Coachman Homes, Inc.) easily integrated Joe and Karen's custom requests. The home, located on Spoke Hill Road, was complete in 2005.
