HAMLIN'S EASY-TO-MAINTAIN "GREEN" RETIREMENT HOME
You'll fall in love in an instant with the sunny, cozy "farmhouse" nestled among Hill Country trees and rocky outcroppings, as though it has been there for years. When you walk up to the front door you can see through to the trees and hills at the back. The downstairs is completely open except for the bathroom and Arlene's office/studio where she can close etched glass French-doors (purchased from Habitat for Humanity) and pursue one of her many ongoing projects.
You're sure to be inspired as well by the homeowners' resourcefulness in creating - on a limited budget - their easy-to-maintain, "green" retirement home. True to the pioneer spirit they wanted their home to convey, Arlene and David Hamlin designed, built and did almost all interior and exterior finish work themselves. Using native rock, cedar cut from their land, and an abundance of recycled materials and fixtures, they artfully pulled it all together to create a warm and inviting space.
Vintage furnishings; richly colored walls; and Arlene's hand-crafted quilts, window coverings and charming country touches will make you want to come and sit a spell. A tranquil back porch affords a spectacular view - the perfect place to unwind, watch the sun set and enjoy the property's abundant wildlife.
Located on RR 2325, the property was originally a part of the Pico Ranch which was divided into 100+ acre ranches. The Hamlins purchased 10 acres from the ranch of Lynette Cole first renting her bunkhouse in 2002.
Arlene designed the house to face northeast with the rear facing southwest so that she and David could open windows and enjoy southerly breezes. All doors, except the front door, are old recycled wooden doors that were purchased from Habitat for Humanity. She also used an old claw foot tub and pedestal sinks. The floors are stained concrete, recycled wood and tile. Cedar posts were cut from the land and are used on the porches and the fireplace mantel is a piece of cedar from the land.
