Judy and Jim Thompson's
Quintessential Creekside Home
In late 2009 Judy and Jim Thompson purchased this property from the Weldon family. Their renovation plan has been to retain the unique character created in the 1930s and 1980s with current materials and design.
It is an intimate, yet open space, reminiscent of that earlier time where friends and family gather to enjoy the Creek and all that Wimberley offers. The home sits on the sloping banks of Cypress Creek near the confluence of the Blanco River and within walking distance of the Wimberley Square. The core character of this home is two double rock wall cabins built in the 1930's as the summer retreat for the Vernon-Weldon family.
In addition to pecan, walnut, sycamore and other native trees the creek side is home to one of the largest cypress trees in the state. At over 39 feet in circumference, it is estimated to be between 800 and 1000 years old.
In the mid-1980s the family designed and implemented a major reconstruction project which included raising the roofs on the cabins and connecting them with a kitchen and dining room as well as adding a master bedroom, master bath, office and garage. With raised ceilings, clerestory windows and glass on the creek side, the home takes advantage of the views of Cypress Creek.
The original fireplace still contains the pot hanger where the family planned to do all their summer time cooking back in the 1930s. The former breezeway is now the kitchen and dining area with views of the creek and front tree-shaded yard.
